Saints Lose Heart Breaker to Iowa Western, 4-3 (JUCO World Series)

May 28, 2016

Lakeland, FL – The Santa Fe Saints, and especially starting pitcher Trent Johnson dominated the Iowa Western CC Reivers for eight innings on Saturday in grand Junction, CO at the JUCO World Series, but three errors in the bottom of the ninth was enough for IWCC to mount a come back and take the game 4-3, sending SF to the loser's bracket.

Johnson was masterful on the mound, allowing just one earned run and six hits in eight innings.  The Reivers didn't threaten until the ninth when they got the first runner on.  The next batter hit a ground ball to second, and what appeared to be a possible double play turned into an error and put two on with no outs.  The next batter laid down a sacrifice bunt on reliever Troy Bacon and the ball was thrown away twice, allowing all three runners to score for the walk off win.

SF scored runs in the second, third, and seventh and out hit the Reivers 10-6.  Saints freshman third baseman was 3-for-4.

Santa Fe will compete in an elimination game on Sunday, May 29 at noon against a team to be determined.
