Johnson Signs with the New York Mets

June 17, 2016

Gainesville, FL – Former Santa Fe Saints pitcher Trent Johnson was recently selected by the New York Mets in the Major League Baseball Draft and just days later signed a contract with the organization, officially starting his professional career.

Johnson will report to the Kingsport Mets (Tennessee) of the Appalachian League this weekend, and begin play with the team on opening day, Thursday, June 23.  Current New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob DeGrom and Steven Matz both began their careers with the Kingsport Mets.

Johnson was the first player off the board for Santa Fe in this year's draft, going to the Mets in the 16 round (490th pick overall).  He caught the attention of scouts early in his career with his ability to throw strikes, and solidified his place in the draft with eight stellar innings at the JUCO World Series against Iowa Western.  He is the all-time winningest pitcher in SF history with 17 victories and is second all-time in strikeouts with 162. He lost just three games in 27 career starts.
