Gainesville, FL – Santa Fe College wasted no time putting away Mid-Florida Conference rivals St. John's River State College on Friday afternoon in Gainesville, run ruling the Vikings 11-1 in seven innings. The win moves SF (32-11, 15-5 MFC) within one half game of SJRSC (16-5 MFC) at the top of the MFC standings and gives them the tiebreaker, having beaten the Vikings three out of four. They have also now clinched a spot in the FCSAA Tournament in Lakeland at Joker Marchant Stadium, May 5-10.
"Our guys came with great energy and confidence today," said SF Coach Johnny Wiggs. "We played very well against St. John's this year and should have won all four games."
Robert Girgis was tasked with holding down the high powered St. John's offense and he did just that, tossing all seven innings, scattering five hits to go with seven strikeouts and no earned runs.
"Today it started with another good outing from Girgis" said Wiggs. "He competed well and worked out of a couple early jams. He settled in and the offense gave him some cushion to work with."
Danny DiMare continued his hot hitting, going a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBI, all coming with two outs. Alex Goebel was also 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored.
"Danny has been really locked in lately for us," Wiggs said. "It's great to see a guy succeed who's worked so hard to get his opportunities."
The lone Vikings run came in the first on a throwing error by the Saints. From there Girgis locked in and held the Vikings scoreless the rest of the way.
Santa Fe answered right back with three in the first, two more in the third, and put the game away with three in the fourth, two more in the fifth, and a game winning walk-off two out hit by Goebel ended the game in the seventh.
The Saints will get back after it tomorrow in Ocala against the College of Central Florida at 1:00 PM.
"Today was a big win but we have four more big ones left, starting tomorrow against a tough Patriots team," Wiggs said.
