Daytona, FL – Andrew Eyster and the Santa Fe Saints had to rally late against Daytona State College, scoring four runs in the eighth to erase a 9-6 Falcons lead. They would tack on six runs in the ninth to put the game away. The win moves them to 33-6 overall and 13-2 in the Mid-Florida Conference.
Eyster had one of his best games of the season, going 4-for-5 with a homerun (12), two doubles, four runs scored, and three RBI. He's now hitting .424 with 29 extra base hits in 158 at bats.
NJCAA #2 Santa Fe had an early 6-0 lead and it looked like they may run away with another MFC game. DSC had other ideas and after a two run second they put six runs across to take an 8-6 lead. They put one more on the board in the seventh but from there the Santa Fe flood gates opened. Kyler Marquis, Mikey Navarrete, and Garrett Mathes singled to start the eighth and Eyster followed with a three run homerun to flip the game back SF's way, 10-9.
The Saints made sure the game was out of reach by scoring six insurance runs on the ninth, five of them coming with two outs. Mathes, Haydn Cano, Jeff Misener, Jarrod Cande, and Jarrett Pico all had RBI in the inning.
Tyler Jones (3-2) picked up the win 3.1 innings in relief, striking out four and allowing just two hits. Garrett Mathes earned the save (5) with two innings of work.
Santa Fe and Daytona will meet in Gainesville on Monday, April 8 at 3:00 p.m. for the second game of their three game series. Fans can watch live on the Saints Sports Network.
