Lakeland, FL – The NJCAA #7/FCSAA #2 Santa Fe Saints (39-9) started their first round game against Hillsborough CC at the FCSAA Tournament on Friday night and finished on Saturday morning, defeating the Hawks 9-1 in eight innings. The game wrapped up at 1:10 a.m.
Max McKinley (7-2) was solid on the mound, going the distance with seven strikeouts and just one walk.
The SF offense provided more than enough support, blasting four homeruns to support their pitcher.
Jarrod Cande (5) started the offensive explosion, hitting a two run homer in the second.
Hillsborough answered with a run in the third but that's all they would muster. A slick double play by Cade Westbrook on a hot shot to third and a dig at first by Garrett Mathes stopped the Hawks rally.
In the fourth Brock Edge (9) hit a mammoth homerun to right field to make the lead 6-1. Mikey Navarrete (1) hit the first homerun of his career an inning later and Andrew Eyster capped the homerun show with one of his own in the eighth, his 13th of the year.
The game came to an end via the mercy rule on a RBI bases loaded walk to Cande.
Santa Fe will move on in the winner's bracket and face the defending National Champion Chipola College Indians on Saturday, May 12 at approximately 7:00 p.m. (check Santa Fe Saints Twitter and Facebook for official game time due to long games or delays.)
