PALATKA, FL – The Santa Fe Saints hung on for a 6-5 win over St. Johns River State College in Palatka Friday night to improve to 22-10 overall and 3-5 in the Mid-Florida Conference.
Anthony Arguelles pitched into the sixth inning allowing just one earned run and Emanuel Fernandez (2-0) earned the win in middle relief with Garrett Mathes getting his third save of the season as the Saints won their second straight game over the Vikings.
"Arguelles gave us a quality start and was very good with the exception of one bad pitch in the sixth," said SF head coach Johnny Wiggs. "This was definitely a real good conference road win."
The Saints broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh when Caleb Stafford and Brock Edge led off with back-to-back singles. Isaiah Perry moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt and Mathes reached on an error to score Stafford and break the tie. Cade Westbrook followed with an RBI single and Mathes scored later in the inning on a bases loaded walk to Kyler Marquis.
Mathes had three hits in the game while Edge and Westbrook had two apiece.
"Out lefthanded hitters carried us offensively with seven of our nine hits." Said Wiggs.
The Saints and Vikings will close out the three-game series when the two teams meet at SF for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday.
