January 30, 2016

Gainesville, FL –At the end of a day that began with the Saints heading out before 6:00 AM from Gainesville, they wrapped up a successful stint at the JUCO Kick-Off Classic in Clearwater, finishing 2-1.

Game one lasted four hours, and the Saints (2-1) earned a 9-8 win in nine innings over Pensacola State College, with Chelsea Malcolm combining with Autumn Green on the mound.  Malcolm picked up her first win of the year and Gina Eller hit her first collegiate home run, a two run bomb over the deep left field fence.  Brashell Keys was 4-for-6 in the game, and Cassandra Garcia was 2-for-3. Evelyn Arguelles collected three RBI, and Garcia and Eller each had two.

"We fought all the way in this game and didn't give up," said Coach Chris Ahern.  "They showed how much grit and determination they have to the end.  It was an entire team effort and they played for each other very well."

In game two, freshman Paola Flores earned her first collegiate win on the mound, tossing a complete game 3-hit shutout against Eastern Florida State College, leading SF to a 6-0 win. Offensively the Saints collected six runs on 10 hits and played flawless defense.  Ki Vega was 3-for-4 at the plate  with an RBI, Garcia was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Arguelles chipped in two hits with 2 RBI, and Chelsea Malcolm also had 2 RBI.

In the nightcap that was scheduled to start at 5:40 but didn't start until after 7:00, the Saints who had been at the field since 9:00 AM with very little break between games, couldn't get anything going offensively, and committed several errors in a 9-0 loss to Georgia Military College.  Brashell Keys was 2-for-3, Ki Vega was 1-for-2, and Chelsea Malcolm 1-for-3.

"Overall we saw the team do a lot of very good things today, and we will work on the things we need to improve to continue to get better," Ahern commented after the marathon day at the ball park. "This team wants to succeed, approaches the game with passion, and is a great group to be around."
