Cameron Trehy singled in the first run and Karina Ortiz-Munoz drove home the second in the bottom of the sixth inning of game two to earn the Saints a 2-0 win and a split of the doubleheader with Tallahassee Community College in Gainesville Tuesday afternoon.
Kaitlyn Bennett started the winning rally with a lead-off single and Adriana Garip followed with a bunt single to put runners on first and second with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt by Emily Yakel, Trehy singled in what proved to be the winning run. Pinch runner Alanis Mercado scored one batter later when Ortiz-Munoz hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to add an insurance run.
"We executed two critical bunts in the sixth inning before Cameron got the big hit," said SF head coach Lindsay Fico. "Cameron came up with another big game winning hit. She has really settled into the DP role very well."
Meanwhile, Gabi Mathre (4-3) was outstanding in the circle for the Saints with a complete game, 3-hit shutout in game two.
"Gabi had another great outlining," said Fico. "She threw two complete games and seemed to get stronger as the day wore on. I am extremely proud of how she handled herself all day."
Mathre was the "hard luck" loser in game one when the Eagles made three first-inning runs stand up for a 3-0 TCC win. TCC managed just three hits off Mathre, two of them coming in the first inning.
Bennett had three hits on the day for the Saints while Garip, Trehy and Siarra Navarro had two hits apiece.
"We played much better defensively today," said Fico. "Melodie Perez made multiple big plays from her shortstop position and Karina saved us a few times at first base."
The Saints (4-9) will travel to Avon Park on Saturday to face South Florida State College in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
