Gainesville, FL – The FCSAA #4/NJCAA #14 Santa Fe Saints played their first ever FCSAA State Tournament game on Thursday in Jacksonville and came out victorious over Daytona State College in an epic five set match (23-25, 30-28, 25-17, 18-25, 15-10). With the win, SF (31-5) moves on to the semifinals and are one win away from clinching a spot in the National Tournament and a shot at the State Championship.
Santa Fe dropped the first set to Daytona 25-23 and trailed 23-16 in the second set before storming back to win 30-28, turning the tide of the entire match.
The Saints took control of the third set and built a comfortable lead before closing it out 25-17. Daytona answered back in the fourth set, cruising to a 25-18 win to knot it back up at 2-2.
In the fifth set it was all Santa Fe from the get go as they clinched a semifinal spot with a 15-10 win.
Ruth Harrington led the way for SF with 21 kills and 12 digs. Savannah Young also turned in a double double, picking up 16 kills to go with 22 digs. Kaylin Powell had 13 kills, Farah Rajaee finished with 59 assists, and Ann Lorrayne Bzoch led with 24 digs.
Next up for the Saints is a date with FCSAA #1 Miami Dade College on Friday, November 7 at 10:00 AM. The match can be seen live on www.ihigh.com/santafesaints. Matching up in the other state semifinal is State College of Florida against Gulf Coast State College.
