Saints Split Conference Games

Saints players go up for the block.

The Santa Fe Saints split a pair of Panhandle Conference games last week, losing in four sets to Florida State College-Jacksonville and defeating Pensacola State College 3-0.

On Thursday, the Saints lost 22-25, 26-28, 25-21, 25-27 to the Blue Wave of FSC-J, but played well enough to win.

"Sometimes you lose a match and sometimes the other team beats you,' said SF head coach Nick Cheronis. "Our kids played with a lot of heart but FSCJ played a pretty flawless match."

Sarah Hamlin had 15 kills, Maddie Sheffield 12 and Kelley Catlett 10, to lead the Saints. The team had a season high of 12 blocks in the match.

On Friday, the Saints returned to Jacksonville to face their other PC rival Pensacola State College and came away with their first conference win of the season. The Saints won in three sets, 25-14, 25-22, 25-20.

Hamlin had 15 of the Saints 36 team kills. "Sarah played within herself tonight and let the game come to her," said Cheronis. "When she does that she can carry us."

The Saints (4-9, 1-1 PC) return to play at home next Saturday when they host The College of Central Florida at 10 am and Hillsborough CC at 2:00 pm. CF will face HCC at 12 noon.
