FCSAA Announces Approved Conference Realignment
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) has announced realignment plans for Division I baseball, basketball (men and women's) and softball, effective August 1, 2023.
Brought forward by the FCSAA's Council for Athletic Affairs (CAA), the realignment proposal was approved by the Florida College System's Council of Presidents during the April business meeting in St. Petersburg, Fla.
"The landscape of two-year athletics in Florida has been in transition over the last five to seven years," said Rob Chaney, FCSAA Associate Director and Athletics Commissioner, "and as schools have either moved to Division II or dropped a sport altogether, we've had to embrace a willingness to adapt.
"Over the last year, there have been numerous (realignment) conversations about the best path forward, but the goal has remained the same: a sustainable model that will promote the best interests of all FCSAA members."
The complete FCSAA release, along with the new approved conference alignments for baseball, softball, and men's and women's basketball are included below.
In baseball and softball, Santa Fe will be a part of "Conference A," which includes the "Panhandle Division" and the "Mid-Florida" Division, as outlined below.
NJCAA Division I men's and women's basketball will also be comprised of two distinct conferences, with the Saints being paired up alongside many of the current members of the Panhandle Conference, among others.
Santa Fe College volleyball will remain in the lone NJCAA Division I conference, the Suncoast Conference, comprising of Florida Southwestern State College, Miami Dade College, Daytona State College, Hillsborough Community College, Polk State College, Indian River State College, Eastern Florida State College, and the State College of Florida.
"The new conference configuration will have a significant impact on our student-athletes, coaches, and the institution as a whole," expressed Director of Athletics Greg McVey. "While I understand the rationale for the decision, I believe that there are still questions that need to be addressed including additional operational expenses, academic concerns with overnight travel, and the scholarship differences between the institutions in the new configuration. That being said, we have an athletic department with coaches and support staff that will continue to provide the best possible experience for the student-athletes at Santa Fe College regardless of the opponent we are facing across the field or court."
