This week's Alumni Spotlight is Yaw Obeng-Mensah. Yaw Obeng-Mensah played basketball at Santa Fe during the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons and in just two years he was able to secure himself as top 15 all-time in rebounding with 402.
Obeng-Mensah was a dominant force on the court for the Saints; a 6'7" Forward from Toronto, Ontario, Canada played in every game for the Saints during his two-year career. During his first season, Obeng-Mensah was named First-Team Mid-Florida Conference while averaging a team-high 11.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.
In Obeng-Mensah's second season, he improved his game in all categories. Averaging 12.6 points and a team-best 9.7 rebounds per game, Obeng-Mensah earned All-Central Conference First Team recognition. Not only did he garner attention from the conference, Obeng Mensah's rebounding average ranked #2 in the FCSAA and #22 in the NJCAA and he added eight double-doubles to go with it. Obeng-Mensah had his Santa Fe career cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but not before being named Saints MVP and signing to continue his playing career at the University of Maryland Baltimore-County (UMBC).
Obeng-Mensah spent two more seasons as a high-volume player for UMBC, playing in all 32 games for the Terriers and starting in the final 20. He ended his junior season averaging 6.9 points and 5.3 rebounds (team best) per game. During his second season for UMBC, Obeng-Mensah started in 31 of 32 games scoring 8.5 points and grabbing 6.4 rebounds per game, again leading the team in that category. Obeng-Mensah had four double-double games for the Terriers in 2022-2023 and a career high 20-point game vs Maine.
Obeng-Mensah's last stop in college was to Niagara University to play under coach Greg Paulus. During the 2023-24 season, Obeng-Mensah averaged 10 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game for the Purple Eagles while shooting 51% from the field.
Obeng-Mensah played his first season professionally in the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL). Obeng-Mensah played for the Brampton Honey Badgers and has now taken his career to the London Lightning in the National Basketball League of Canada.
