Gainesville, FL
This week's Alumni Spotlight is Malea Brown, a member of the Santa Fe College Women's Basketball program from 2021 to 2023. Following her successful career as a Saint, Brown continued her academic and athletic journey at Longwood University, where she enters her graduate season with the Lancers for 2025-26.
At Santa Fe, Brown delivered an impressive two seasons under former head coach and current Athletic Director Chanda Stebbins, averaging 19.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3.4 steals per game during her sophomore season.
Her performance helped solidify her as one of the program's top contributors as she is third all-time in points (894), 33rd all-time in assists (139), T-6th all-time in steals (149), and 4th all-time in career scoring average (17.2). Brown also holds the single game scoring record with 44 points in a game vs. St. Petersburg on February 18th, 2023.
Brown then took her talents to Longwood University, where she has made a significant impact. She started all 34 games last year for the Lancers, averaging 28.4 minutes and 9.4 points per game while contributing 3.9 rebounds per game and shooting 39.3% from the field. Brown also shot 34.2% from beyond the arc and 77.3% from the free-throw line, proving further that she can score the ball many ways.
Defensively, she was everywhere, ranking second in the Big South with 84 total steals and 3rd in steals per game with 2.5. Her 84 steals marked the eighth-highest single-season total in Longwood program history and placed her 33rd nationally in steals per game.
Off the court, Brown has excelled academically, earning College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors and being named to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll for the second consecutive year.
"Malea has been a great ambassador for Longwood Women's Basketball. She is an exceptional student athlete, a great teammate, and she shows up every day ready to work!" adds Longwood University head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery. "She always has a positive attitude; our program relies on her energy on both sides of the ball. She recently earned her bachelor's degree, and we are excited she was granted another year of eligibility. We are excited for her to maximize her final season on the court!"
