Alumni Spotlight: Troy Bacon
This week's Alumni Spotlight is Troy Bacon who played baseball from 2015-2017!
Gainesville, FL
Troy Bacon finished his career at Santa Fe as one of their best pitchers in program history. Named Mid-Florida Conference (MFC) Pitcher of the Year in 2016 and 2x Closer of the Year, his dominance on the mound earned him a 4th round pick (110 Overall) in the 2017 MLB Draft where he signed with the Atlanta Braves to begin his professional career.
Bacon went 9-3 as a pitcher in two years at Santa Fe, with 46 appearances in two years primarily as a closer. He kept a stellar 1.29 ERA with 123 total strikeouts, a whopping 13.18 combined K/9. He joined for other Saints who have been selected within the first five rounds of the MLB Draft.
Bacon racked up countless awards, including NJCAA All-American, First Team FCSAA, First team All-MFC, FCSAA All-Tournament, NJCAA Gulf Coach District team, FCSAA Closer of the Year, and an FCSAA State Title all in 2016. Honors of MFC Closer of the Year, First team MFC, and Second Team FCSAA came in 2017.
His legacy is still written in the Santa Fe Baseball record book, leading the program with 23 saves over his two years as a Saint: 10 more than the next closest. His 1.29 ERA is also best in program history.
Bacon signed with the Atlanta Braves shortly after he was selected and had a five-year professional career, reaching the Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, the Mississippi Braves. Throughout his career, Bacon pitched 203.1 innings, earning a 16-8 record. In 2021, he helped the Mississippi Braves to a AA-South Championship, the first championship for AA Mississippi in 13 years. His first earned run that year came in his 10th appearance after 13.0 straight scoreless innings of work.
After the 2022 season, Bacon played one year with the independent Charleston Dirty Birds in the Atlantic League, going 4-4 over 66 innings and striking out a professional career high 65 batters. Following 2023, he continued his education at Southern New Hampshire University, finishing his degree in Cybersecurity in 2024 and now pursues that full time.
