Alumni Spotlight: Donnie Gobourne
This week's Alumni Spotlight is Donnie Gobourne who played Softball from 2018-2020!
Gainesville, FL
Dontaysha, better known as Donnie, went on to play for the FAU Owls from 2021-2022 and eventually became a starter at South Carolina for the Gamecocks after her time at Santa Fe. On April 18, she was drafted in the 5th round to the Oklahoma City Spark in the Women's Professional Fastpitch Draft.
During her time at Santa Fe, she dominated as a two-way player, cumulating a .322 batting average with seven home runs and 24 RBIs and threw 83.2 innings with a 2.68 ERA while striking out 103 batters. She was named to the All-Conference team and won multiple Player of the Week honors.
Her first year at Florida Atlantic University, her and Head Coach Joan Joyce honed in her pitching aspects, and finished second on the team in innings pitched with 2 complete games, one against an NCAA tournament-bound USF. In 2022, the power pitcher recorded 64.2 innings with 89 strikeouts (9.7 s/o per seven innings). She pitched in 17 games with 4 complete games, and was ranked first in Conference USA in opposing batting average (.192), hits allowed (44), and home runs allowed (4).
After dominating for the Owls in 2022, she went to South Carolina and stayed red-hot with the Gamecocks for her senior season. She threw 134.1 innings and had 202 strikeouts (13th all-time for Gamecocks), with a 10.54 s/o per seven innings (2nd all-time for Gamecocks). She also led all of Division I in strikeouts per seven innings for seven weeks straight. She finished the year with a record of 14-7 and 6 saves (6th most all-time for Gamecocks). She also recorded seven complete games with three shut-outs and had 5 double digit strikeout games. Some of her most impressive outings were when she posted a no-hitter against #17 Auburn, which was the first no-hitter by a Carolina pitcher in SEC play since 2002, and when she carried a no-hit bid down to the last strike in the top of the seventh in against #11 Florida before surrendering a hit, all while recording 15 strikeouts in the game.
This success was recognized by her being named to the All-SEC First Team, named NFCA All-Region Second Team, and named to SEC All-Tournament Team. She then became the first Gamecock drafted professionally since 2013 when she was selected 17th overall (5th round, 1st pick), in the Women's Professional Fastpitch Draft by the Oklahoma City Spark.
Her success throughout her college career speaks volumes to her diligence and work ethic, as she wasn't recruited as a pitcher from high school, but saw an opportunity and gave it 100% effort. "I didn't start my pitching career until I went to (Santa Fe) junior college," Gobourne said. "In high school, I was technically a shortstop, and I would throw maybe two or three innings per season. When I went to JUCO, I knew I had to buckle down and focus on pitching more. I was recruited as both, but I wasn't a fully developed pitcher. Once I got there, my coach called for all the pitchers, and I showed her what I could do. Then we just started working."
She is still in the Women's Professional Fastpitch League, but now plays for the Atlanta Smoke. Her latest accomplishment was when she was named 2025 Pitcher of the Year!
