Bio
Greg McVey began as the Santa Fe College Athletic Director on Monday, May 17, 2021.
In his first year with the Saints in 2021-2022, Santa Fe won one conference title, with men's basketball securing the Central Conference crown. McVey has also taken on administrative roles as a member of the District 3 Executive Committee for the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA). Additionally, he was named the Chair for the Mid-Florida/Central Conference and the Softball State Chair for 2022-2024.
Prior to taking the helm of the Saints’ athletic program, McVey spent 28 years working in intercollegiate athletics at several levels including the NJCAA, NAIA and NCAA, giving him a unique perspective on the role athletics plays in higher education.
"I am a firm believer that participation in intercollegiate athletics is not just an activity, but rather an extension of the education process," McVey said. "Student-athletes learn valuable life skills such as teamwork, communication, and overcoming adversity to name a few. Those life lessons will last them many years after their athletic careers end."
McVey most recently served as Athletic Director at Garden City Community College in Kansas from May 2019 until his resignation on October of 2020. With the Broncbusters’ NJCAA program, he oversaw 15 intercollegiate programs, two fitness centers and the college's intramural program.
Additionally, McVey helped revitalize the Broncbuster Athletic Association, a body constructed solely to serve the needs of student athletes through scholarships. He was also the driving force behind the installation of a brand-new, state-of-the-art digital scoreboard in Conestoga Arena. Amongst other contributions, McVey was part of a team that secured a $300,000 grant from the Sunderland Foundation for the complete remodel of two athletic-training facilities.
Other Administrative Posts
- College of DuPage (NJCAA, Glen Ellen, Ill.) – Director of Athletics & Recreation (2018-2019)
- Jefferson College (NJCAA, Hillsboro, Mo.) – Director of Athletics (2015-2018)
- Culver-Stockton College (NAIA, Canton, Mo.) – Director of Athletics (2010-2014)
- Quincy University (NCAA Div. II, Quincy, Ill.) – Associate Director of Athletics (2007-2010)
In each of these roles, McVey has evidenced a propensity for leading the way to growth and success, both on and off the field.
At the College of DuPage, the department hosted the 2018 Red Grange Bowl sponsored by the NJCAA that crowns the football national champion on a yearly basis for the non-scholarship football playing institutions.
During McVey’s tenure, the Jefferson College Vikings recorded a combined .670 winning percentage, won nine Missouri Community College Athletic Conference Championships, four NJCAA Region 16 Championships, three NJCAA District titles and made three National Tournament appearances. In addition, the Vikings had 151 Academic All-MCCAC, 108 Academic All-NJCAA Region 16, and 36 NJCAA Academic All-Americans. McVey spearheaded several facility upgrades while in Hillsboro including a new indoor high-definition video board, remodel of the athletic training room, baseball stadium backstop and seating improvements, and the complete renovation of the campus fitness center. Vikings’ athletics were also visible in the community while the department performed several hundred hours of learning service throughout Jefferson County-which included reading at elementary schools, free sports’ clinics, and stocking shelves at local food pantries.
In 2012-13 at Culver-Stockton, the athletic department was named a ‘5-Star Champions of Character Institution’ by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for the first time in history. The program recognizes the five-core character values at the NAIA level: responsibility, respect, integrity, sportsmanship and servant leadership. McVey also helped the department add three new athletic teams: men’s volleyball in 2013, women’s bowling in 2014 and men’s bowling in 2014.
At Quincy. he wrote and secured two NCAA Coaching Enhancement Grants for the addition of minority/female coaches, specifically for the football and women’s soccer program. He was also the lead administrator for several large-scale athletic events including the Subway Holiday Tip-Off men’s basketball tournament, Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Championship and the St. Louis Cardinals’ winter caravan.
"I am excited about the leadership experience that Mr. McVey brings to the college," SF's Vice President Dr. Naima Brown said for the new Athletic Director. "He has done very well with fundraising, growing tight budgets, improving athletic facilities and connecting to the community. I look forward to working with him."
