Saints Hold Off Manatees for 7-5 Win
Lance Bolton and Emanuel Fernandez combined to pitch four innings of no-hit relief to preserve a Saints 7-5 win over State College of Florida, Manatee – Sarasota Wednesday afternoon in Bradenton.
Robb Adams, last week's NJCAA Region VIII Pitcher of the Week, started for the Saints but gave up 10 hits in five innings leading to five runs although only two were earned. Bolton (1-1) pitched into the eighth inning to earn the win and Fernandez earned his third save of the season by closing out the eighth and ninth.
"We didn't play a real clean game today," said SF head coach Johnny Wiggs, "but the guys kept competing and got it done. We got some great relief pitching out of Bolton and Fernandez."
With the scored tied 3-3 heading into the fifth inning the Saints strung together five singles and took advantage of one SCF error to score four times for a comfortable 7-3 lead. The Manatees (7-8) managed to push two runs across in the bottom of the fifth, but that would be as close as they would get.
Jevin Relaford, Caleb Stafford and Zeb Marquis had two hits apiece for the Saints while Coy Phillips and Stafford each drove in two runs. Nick Herndon kept his streak alive with a single to start the game. The freshman out of Thomasville, GA. has now hit safely in all 14 games he has appeared in this year.
SF (13-4), presently ranked third in the state and 15th in the nation, will host Polk State College at 3 pm.
