Rodriguez Signs to Play Baseball at FGCU
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After two prolific seasons with the Santa Fe Saints baseball team, Luis Rodriguez has signed to continue his academic and athletic career with the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles.
FGCU is a member of the Division I Atlantic Sun Conference (ASUN). Head Coach Dave Tollett has been the head coach since 2002, the program's first year.
Tollett has been named ASUN Coach of the Year five times and has won the ASUN Conference Championship six times, including the 2019 title. He has accumulated over 600 wins over his career at FGCU, and has assisted 47 players and signees to go on to be drafted in the MLB Draft or sign as a free agent. The Eagles went 28-20 in 2021 and look to improve under Tollett's direction headed into 2022.
Rodriguez, the Guarenas, Venezuela native and Miami Christian graduate, was a standout infielder for Head Coach Johnny Wiggs, helping the Saints to a FCSAA State Tournament runner-up finish in 2021.
The right-handed hitter appeared in 44 games for the Saints as the team's third baseman.
He led Santa Fe in at-bats (163), hits (57), doubles (17), home runs (12), RBI (54), and slugging percentage (.687) while ranking second on the team in batting average (.350) and second in runs scored (39).
No. 11's accolades include selection to the All-Mid Florida Conference First Team, the FCSAA All-State First Team, and he was one of seven Saints to be named to the All-Tournament Team at the FCSAA State Tournament.
He had two multi-home run games, March 10 at Daytona State and March 15 vs. St. John's River, earning him FCSAA/NJCAA Region 8 Player of the Week.
Rodriguez held a 14-game hitting streak from March 28 - May 7, and reached base safely in the season's final 17 games.
In 2020 as a sophomore transfer from Dyersburg State College, Rodriguez produced 33 hits, including seven doubles, a triple, and two home runs for Santa Fe. He drove in 24 runs and scored 22 himself while batting .375 in the season that was cut short due to COVID-19.
