Johns signs with Tampa
Pitcher Lucas Johns has officially signed to play at the University of Tampa
Right-handed pitcher Lucas Johns has committed to continue his collegiate baseball career at the University of Tampa. A Lake Butler, FL native and Union County High School graduate, Johns brings a strong arm and continued development to the Spartans' pitching staff.
After beginning his college career at FSCJ, Johns transferred to Santa Fe College as a redshirt sophomore. In the 2024 season, he appeared in 18 games, recording a 8.70 ERA, 1.90 WHIP, and 6.30 K/9. Johns made notable improvements in 2025 under Johnny Wiggs, lowering his ERA to 4.73 with a 1.71 WHIP and 7.32 K/9 over 14 appearances. Johns was a dominant force in high school, posting a 1.12 ERA and racking up 83 strikeouts his senior year.
"Lucas has an incredible story. He started as a redshirt for us, and throughout his time here, his work ethic has been off the charts. To watch a player go from not making the team to signing with one of the best Division II schools in the country is truly amazing." Says Wiggs.
Johns joins a University of Tampa program that has been dominant in NCAA Division II baseball. The Spartans boast a 47–8 overall record and a 27–3 mark in Sunshine State Conference play, securing the #1 seed in the NCAA DII Championship. They have also secured nine national championships, tying for the most in Division II history.
