Nine unanswered lift Saints to victory
Santa Fe outlasts Tallahassee State 11-7 with late game runs
Gainesville, FL
FINAL: Santa Fe Saints 9, Tallahassee State Eagles 7
Santa Fe's slow start on the mound defined the day early, but a mid game jolt of energy turned the day around for the Saints.
The game began with the Eagles' first baseman Andre Modugno sending a two-run home run deep over centerfield in the third at-bat. Brady Wright was pulled just three batters later, making way for Travis Mabin to pitch in relief. Mabin would help the Saints escape the first-inning jam with a strikeout, but the Eagles would steal four bases and score two runs during his 1.1-inning relief.
After a 4-0 deficit, Johnny Wiggs would continue to make calls to the Saints' bullpen, turning to multiple pitchers in several consecutive innings. Eagles' right fielder Mason Moore would send a two-run shot during Monger's stint of relief, extending the Saints' deficit to 6-0.
The Saints' inconsistency in bringing baserunners home left the Eagles' early lead relatively unchallenged. The Saints would load the bases with walks in the first inning, and got another two on base in the bottom of the third, but drove none in. However, it was Tucker Hansen who would finally break the ice for the Saints in the fourth, sending a deep two-run shot over left field to make the score 6-2.
The Saints answered a firery TSC start with some fifth-inning fire of their own. The Saints dugout exploded after singles from Cole Carnell, James Suarez, and Hansen drove in a combined five RBIs during the inning, helping the Saints storm in front by a score of 7-6. Two innings later, doubles from Samuel Castillo and Hayden Montanez extended the lead to 9-6 during the seventh inning. Shawn Andrade and Ethan Monrad kept the lead out of reach from the Eagles with base hits that further kept the lead out of reach.
It was all Saints the rest of the way. After six runs from the Eagles in four innings, the Saints would go on to outscore the Eagles 11-1 to dominate the rest of the day.
Easton McMahan recieves the W as the Saints will travel next to Leesburg, FL to play Lake-Sumter State College on Friday, February 6 at 1:00pm EST.
