Saints stifle Pirates second half surge
Santa Fe improves to 9-1 with win vs Pensacola State College
Tallahassee, FL
Santa Fe improved to (9-1) on the year with a 67-61 win over Pensacola State College (10-3) on Sunday, December 7th in the Florida JUCO Shootout.
In the final game of the Florida JUCO Shootout, Santa Fe came out hot vs a 10-win Pensacola State team who recieved votes in the last NJCAA DI Men's Basketball rankings.
Only two Saints ended the game with over ten points; Moses Horne led the way with 22 while Jahari Simmons had 13 in the contest. The Saints took advantage of a lackluster Pensacola State first half and entered the locker room with a 34-19 advantage. The Pirates came out of the gates in the second half cutting the lead to single digits and eventually took the lead by three, but a strong finish from Santa Fe was able to spoil any comeback the Pirates were hoping for.
"We defended in the post and battled on the glass for most of the game against a very good and physical Pensacola team" added head Coach John Ritzdorf. "The middle of the 2nd half was rough and gave up a big lead, but I was really proud of how we responded from being up 19 to down by 3. We got stops down the stretch and made enough plays on offense to close it out."
Tre Dubois added 8 rebounds including a huge offensive rebound at the end to seal the win for the Saints.
Santa Fe will take the road and play two games in the 9th Annual B-Mac's Christmas Classic; the first on Friday, December 12th vs South Georgia State College at 8:00pm and then the following day vs. Albany Tech at 2:00pm.
