#4 Santa Fe College (32-7, 17-6) hosted #22 Daytona State College (29-12, 14-12) for a doubleheader on Thursday, April 9th. Santa Fe won the first game 8-7, and Daytona State bounced back to win the second game 15-4 in five innings.
Game 1
After forcing a strikeout, ground out, and fly out to the first three batters in the top of the first inning, the Saints scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 3-0 lead. Molly Bender hit a leadoff double and scored from a Mckenzie Cox ground ball. Cox advanced to second on an error, and Haylee McCrea grounded into a fielder's choice to bring Cox home. A single by Ellie Frierson scored Sydney English, who drew a walk earlier in the inning.
The Falcons hit a solo home run in the top of the second, but the Saints were able to extend their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the second. Bender drew a leadoff walk and scored from a double by Miranda Murch. McCrea scored Murch in the next at-bat with a single.
Daytona cut the lead to 5-2 in the top of the third, but Cox hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead to 6-2.
The Falcons scored five runs in the top of the sixth to take their first lead of the game 7-6. A leadoff walk followed by a single and a home run gave Daytona three runs. Another walk, an error, and two singles gave the Falcons two more runs.
Down one in the bottom of the seventh, Frierson drew a walk and Tegan Grizzard hit a home run to give the Saints an 8-7 Game 1 victory.
Ellie Frierson led the team with two hits, Haylee McCrea and Tegan Grizzard both recorded two RBIs, and Molly Bender stole a base.
Belle Mancillas earned the win on the mound, recording seven strikeouts while allowing five hits, three walks, and two earned runs over five innings.
Game 2
Daytona scored five runs in the top of the second and three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 9-0 lead.
Santa Fe scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 9-4. Molly Bender hit a leadoff double and scored from a fielder's choice induced by Sydney English. Laura Pierce scored on a single by Haylee McCrea, Miranda Murch scored on a ground out by Ellie Frierson, and McCrea scored on a bunt by Tegan Grizzard.
A pair of home runs allowed the Falcons to score six runs in the top of the fifth, ultimately giving Daytona the 15-4 win.
The Saints will play at #9 Indian River State College (31-8, 15-6) on Saturday, April 11th for a doubleheader starting at 1:00pm. Indian River plays a doubleheader at #10 Eastern Florida State College (30-8, 16-6) on Friday, April 10th starting at 1:00pm.
